| [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]Most people would agree that there is something terribly wrong with shooting and smashing in the skulls of baby seals, but despite international outrage, the Canadian government allows sealers to beat and skin hundreds of thousands of these gentle animals every year. By allowing the massacre of baby seals to continue, the Canadian government dismisses the concerns of decent people all around the world. As the country prepares to host the 2010 Winter Olympics, Canada's shame will overshadow Canada's Games. Please take a moment to send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper educating readers about the Canadian seal slaughter. In your letter, urge them to [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] and ask for a complete ban on seal-fur products in the EU. It's easy to write an effective letter. - PETA
is calling on the European Union to use its influence to help put a stop to the annual seal slaughter by banning the sale of all seal-fur products in the EU.
- Sealers routinely hook live seals in the eye, cheek or mouth to avoid damaging the fur
- About
95 per cent of seals killed are under 3 months old, and many may not have even eaten their first solid meal or learned how to swim before they are skinned for their fur
- There's
no justification for clubbing and skinning baby seals alive. In Newfoundland, income from the seal slaughter accounts for approximately 1 per cent of the province's economy, but even if it were more, there will never be an excuse for clubbing baby animals as their mothers look on in horror and fear
- The
seal slaughter is not a subsistence trade for native peoples; it is an off-season profit venture for fishers off Canada's East Coast. Inuit seal hunting accounts for about 3 per cent of the slaughter
